Type-06 Main Battle Tank
The S1 Type-06 is the latest development of Ireland's main battle tanks, and is an introduction to the S series of Ireland's MBTs. The S1 Type-06 Main Battle Tank (MBT), with it's great increase in firepower, protection, and it's innovative technologies, replaced the ambiguous M1A1 Abrams Tank that has restrained Ireland from emerging as a major power in modern tank warfare. With new, innovative tanks being introduced all over the world: the Ireland Defence Forces could not be left behind, and are now using a tank that can challenge some of the world's best technologies in warfare. All the while, still keeping the indigenous design of the Ireland tanks.
Design: The Basics
The layout is in mostly Western design (resembles that of the French Leclerc MBT), but still with some influence of the traditional Irish style. The driver is located at the center front of the hull, with the fighting compartment/turret in the centre, and power pack in the rear. If the need arises, the complete powerpack assembly may be removed in roughly 30 minutes; depending on the hastiness of the crew. Weighing at only about 39 tons, the S1 has the an even greater mobility than that of the Abrams (better propulsion).
Armor: The New Protection
Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) have been great problems facing the military in the past. They are easy to find, and are very cheap. RPGs and other "shape charge" munitions derive their destructive power from cones of copper embedded in their noses. When the warhead explodes, it crushes the cone, shooting out a jet of hot copper at 5,000 mph -- instantly destroying anything short of a tank. But now, the Irish Forces does not have to worry, with the new technologies installed on the S1. With the new lightweight and highly effective armor system, Electric Armor, the jets are stopped by electrifying them with tens of thousands of amps of current. Thus, vaporizing some of the deadly copper jets and reduces the rest to a relatively harmless mixture of melted and pulverized debris that disperses around the vehicle. The S1 may be attacked multiple times directly by RPGs, and drive away without a scratch, or perhaps just a small mark on where the inbound hit. On the contrary, an older tank could be destroyed, or heavily damaged by one or two attacks. If the projectile gets through the electrical field, it must penetrate a series of defensive measures. The S1 Type-06 is plated with Titanium alloys, as opposed to the steel (RHA) nations were using in the past. The alloys have a high mass efficiency compared with rolled homogeneous (steel) armor (RHA) and aluminum alloys across a broad spectrum of ballistic threats as well as good multi-hit ballistic capability. They have a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance, which results in lower maintenance costs. Titanium alloys are readily fabricated in existing production facilities and are easily recycled; scrap and mill revert is currently remelted on a large-scale commercial basis. Plating the Titanium alloys, instead of steel, reduces the weight by almost 30%: which shall prove effective on the battlefield.
The core armor consists of Chobham Armor, consisting of an arrangement of metal plates, ceramic blocks and open space (exact layer arrangement and details top secret). And the S1 has extra layers of depleted uranium and Titanium alloys that supplement the Chobham-style armor. This combination will hold up to any tank round and most missiles; it is also very resistant to HEAT and Sabot rounds. In order to help prevent the tank's rounds from going off from attack and destroying the tank from the inside; the rounds are kept in heavily armored compartments. The tank also features an onboard fire suppression system that quickly extinguishes any fires that occur inside the tank. The S1 Type-06 Main Battle Tank is also equipped with an advanced air filter system that purifies all air coming into the tank so that the crew is safe from outside airborne dangers. This feature eliminates the risk of a crew in a potential chemical or biological attack.
Defensive Systems: Stopping the threat before it arrives
The S1 features the UZ-3 integrated laser rangefinder/warning/self-defence device. Unlike other tanks, for instance, the contemporary Russian active tank self-defense systems like Drozd, Drozd-2, and Arena, which launch projectiles to disable or "shoot-down" incoming anti-tank missiles and projectiles, the Uzb3kistan system apparently uses a high-powered laser to directly attack the enemy weapon's optics and gunner. It also features jammers to confuse the enemy and stop incoming missiles from hitting it's target. Mounted outside the gunner's hatch, a 15.5mm heavy machine gun serves as protection from enemy infantry as well as a last-ditch defense from hostile aircraft, and it has a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. It is unmanned and can either be controlled by a crewman inside of the tank, or the crew can leave it to the computer that will target enemies (it will know if it is a friendly or not, because all units are linked wirelessly with the new infantry suits). Four SA-7 light SAMs are mounted which are the tank's main anti-aircraft system. They can be automatically controlled by the targeting computer system installed, or by the secondary gunner. The Type-06 is also equipped with two turret-mounted grenade dischargers that can launch smoke grenades in any direction desired by the crew, to help avoid being seen by the enemy. Also, mounted near the turret there are 8 Anti-Tank Guided Missiles that are IR/LIDAR Guided.
Shaitan Corp. scientists are currently researching upgrades for the defensive systems that are slightly outdated, and will be installed on the newest upcoming MBT.
Propulsion: Getting You There on Time
The Type-01 is powered by a liquid cooled, turbocharged 1,200 hp diesel derived from Germany WD396 diesel technology. At its current battle weight of 38 tons, this gives the tank a power-to-weight ratio of about 32 hp/tonne and a maximum speed of 90km/h (56 mph).
Main Armament
The main armament is a 140mm ETC gun with an autoloader. The Electro-Thermal Chemical (ETC) process is where electricity is used to increase the propagation rate of propellant combustion and increase the total amount of energy released by the propellant. ETC is able to be integrated into existing weapons systems. What's more, ETC is completely scalable. You can apply a relatively low amount of electrical energy (less than 100 kilojoules) to speed up conventional propellant ignition (which would cause an earlier peak in chamber pressure, allowing more expanding gas energy to be used to accelerate the projectile). Or at the other end of the spectrum, you can apply very large amounts of energy (5 mega joules) for tailor-made propellants, converting them to a high energy plasma rather than burning in the conventional sense -- this results in even higher chamber pressures than through electrically charged conventional propellants. The gun is capable of firing traditional HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank), APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot), and traditional HE/HE-FRAG (High-Explosive / High-Explosive Fragmentation) rounds, ect. The main gun carries 50 rounds stored in protected compartments, with 17 being mounted automatically in the auto-reload. After the initial 16 shells have been fired, either the gunner or commander is forced to begin an automatic reload sub-routine, which takes some 50 seconds to complete, though it can be interrupted to resume firing.
